Ski workshop servicing: the steps and the machines

Tuning a ski in the workshop means running four operations in a precise order. Here is the equipment each one needs, and how to choose according to the number of skis you process.

The four operations of a full ski tune

A full ski tune always follows the same logic: flatten the base and give it its structure, sharpen the edges, wax, then finish by brushing. The most complete robots in the catalogue chain these steps in a single process: pre-grinding, stone grinding, edge sharpening and waxing.

Sizing the workshop to your volume

The right equipment depends on the number of skis you process. A resort workshop tuning a few dozen pairs a day does not have the same needs as a rental shop that reconditions its whole fleet between two seasons.

As a benchmark, the SF-4 Race robot is rated at 50 to 70 skis per hour and from 1,500 to 40,000 skis or snowboards per season depending on its configuration of 1 to 4 modules. At the other end of the range, the Chatex CUB is a compact belt grinder and edge sharpener that plugs into 220 V, and the KSM belt edge sharpener is presented as suited to small workshops.

The equipment around the machines

Machines are not everything. A ski workshop needs a ski vise, edge tools, ski wax products, a compressor for pneumatic machines and, for a rental shop, boot hygiene equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sharpening and base edge bevelling?

Sharpening works the side edge, with an adjustable angle. Base edge bevelling (or tuning) works the base edge. On the DTS-U II Race edge sharpener, the side angle is adjustable from 86° to 90° and the base edge angle from 0° to 2°.

How long does it take to sharpen a pair of skis?

It depends on the machine. The DTS-U II Race sheet gives a full sharpening cycle of about 30 seconds. The overall throughput of a robot is counted in skis per hour.

Can you start with a single machine?

Yes, a belt grinder with side edge sharpening (such as the PROFI B with the option) covers the basic steps. You then add a waxing machine, then a dedicated edge sharpener.
