Ski base grinders: belt, stone or combined
The base grinder flattens the base and gives it its structure. The Chatex catalogue offers belt grinders, stone grinders and Reichmann combined machines, as well as the Chatex CUB and the R.off.B range.
Belt grinder or stone grinder?
The belt grinder (PROFI B, PROFI B 350 and Chatex CUB family) is the basic workshop machine: pre-grinding, grinding and, depending on the options, side edge sharpening. The stone grinder (PROFI S 200 Racing, PROFI S 350 Racing) is geared to race base structures, with a library of pre-programmed structures.
The Profi 4 Racing brings both together in a single machine. Our comparison of belt or stone grinder details the differences based on the manufacturer sheets.
What the sheets say
A few benchmarks taken from the sheets: 350 x 1500 mm belt and touch panel with programs for the PROFI B Vario, 350 mm stone for the PROFI S 350 Racing with 8 inch colour touchscreen and structure advisor, 350 mm belt and stone in line for the Profi 4. The Chatex CUB offers a 350 mm belt and adjustable edge sharpening from 87 to 90°.

Frequently asked questions
Which base grinder to start a ski workshop?
A belt grinder with optional side edge sharpening, such as the PROFI B or the Chatex CUB (220 V), covers the basic steps. Pneumatic models need 400 V and compressed air.
Can a belt grinder put structure into the base?
Yes. The VARIO ceramic belts of the PROFI B Vario are presented as able to create structure, including on convex or concave snowboards, with a result comparable to stone grinding according to the manufacturer.
